Cellular IoT Connectivity: Increasingly adopted for most IoT projects

The choice of connectivity for deploying an IoT project can affect range, reliability and eventually how your solution performs. It can also affect device battery performance as data transfer speed fluctuates. Given that there are a number of IoT connectivity options available for IoT device deployments but cellular IoT is becoming increasingly popular simply because of the secure and scalable device connections.

Essentially there are two different groups that are available in cellular IoT connectivity namely, High data rate cellular and low data rate cellular. The high data rate cellular uses generations of 3GPP mobile networks whereas the lower data rate uses Low Power Wide Area Network, commonly known as LPWAN.

High data rate cellular is known to offer very comprehensive coverage which makes it the perfect choice for cellular IoT use-case which requires higher data transfers between devices and the cloud such as real-time video. For instance, if public transport needs to be equipped with WiFi then this option would be ideal.

Whereas by contrast Lower power Wide Area Network will offer lower rate data connectivity for IoT devices but this will be compensated with lower bandwidth requirements.

Benefits for cellular IoT connectivity

Deploying IoT solutions anywhere, cellular wins hands down. Not only it offer security but also scales easily without having significant overheads.

  • Simple

Deploying IoT devices through cellular IoT is simply about activating your SIM remotely through a connectivity management platform and you are good to go. And with cellular tech such as eSIm(eUICC), cellular can provide an incredibly flexible way to connect and manage devices.

  • Global IoT Connectivity

Existing large-scale cellular network infrastructure provides ubiquitous connectivity and global coverage enabling accessibility of IoT devices that technology like WiFi simply could not provide. Those black spots are the things of the past.

  • Cost

Earlier the cost of connecting an IoT device to a cellular network was high but when the times have changed and data costs have reduced significantly and there is high competition in the market among mobile network providers which has brought down the data cost and now connecting and enabling an IoT device is not that expensive anymore.
