Car Connectivity – The Future of the Automobile World

The technology is developing at a rapid pace, & IoT connectivity has changed the way individuals communicate & do their day-to-day tasks. In other words, the world is ‘connected’, & you can find everything on the internet. When everything is connected via the internet, why wouldn’t cars do the same? Well, this new technology is known as the “Connected Vehicle Platform”. Car connectivity has become the new norm in today’s automobile industry, & we can only expect it to get better. Read on to know more about connected vehicle applications, car data monetization, and the future of connected car solutions. The connected cars will rely on the major three pillars – infotainment, infrastructure, and telematics. Infotainment consists of heads-up displays, in-car entertainment including audio, and more. It will build the bridge between drivers, passengers, & the vehicle, offering real-time insight into the functionality. And, infrastructure bridges the car & environment, allowing the car to perceive the presence of pedestrians, traffic lights, and even communicate with the driver’s smart home. Finally, telematics connects the vehicle to the cloud, letting it gather & share the essential data related to driver behavior & car function.

Features of Connected Car Service Enablement

Connected vehicle applications come equipped with a host of smart & convenient features. The features of car connectivity improve the overall driving & ownership experience. It also adds a safety net with advanced security features. Following are some smart features of the connected vehicle platform –

Internet Connectivity in Vehicles – The vehicles are always connected to the internet via the embedded chipset or SIM card. It can access the internet, provided there is stable wireless network coverage. Connected cars can also offer onboard Wi-Fi connectivity, access other online apps & services, and download over-the-air updates released by the manufacturer.

Edge Computing in Automotive – Connected vehicles will continue to evolve at the exponential rate with V2X & V2V communication. This generates a large volume of data (every connected vehicle will generate data up to 4TB/day). And, this same applies to vehicles. The typical luxury vehicle contains hundreds of sensors. Although all the data generated is processed in the car, several in-car applications require transfer of data to the cloud. With Edge computing, data pushed to cloud can be limited more smartly. It can process & analyze most of the data at edge & only select non-sensitive data can be transferred to cloud. This brings data transmission costs down & also protects sensitive data leaving vehicle.

App to Car Connectivity – Nowadays, car manufacturers offer a dedicated smartphone app that connects with the car through a wireless network. The app allows users to remotely operate functions of the car like locking or unlocking the door, engine start/stop, opening sunroof, climate control, honk the horn, and headlight on/off. The app will also help to locate the car via onboard GPS.

A fully connected car – By now, almost 90 percent of the newly manufactured vehicles come with an Internet connection & cloud access. As the connected vehicle becomes the mainstream, internet connectivity will start to be processed as one of the most important modern vehicle systems, equally important as engine & steering system. While self-driving vehicles are still far from becoming omnipresent, the connected vehicle is already the new normal.

Future of Connected Car Technology

The connected car platform by AIRLINQ will not be limited to conventional vehicles. Self-driving cars will also make use of this modern technology to communicate with road infrastructure & cloud systems. But at present, connected vehicles are disrupting the automobile industry. With more smart cars being launched, buyers are leaning towards connected vehicles. In the coming years, connected vehicle technology will be the new norm. It will also boost safety and reduce accidents. The next generation 5G connectivity will improve the technology, and connected cars will be even smarter & smoother to use.
